HOW I MAKE MY COLORED PIECES

-

Wedged clay ready to roll out.

Slabs after they are smoothed and
shaped by the slab roller.

Press on various textures.

Creating raised areas in the slab.

Vessel with raised and carved elements in the wet clay.

A variety of pieces dried and ready for bisque firing.

The fired pieces are painted with black acrylic paint.

Finally, I draw over the black with things like colored pencils.

THE PROCESS OF SGRAFFITO-WARE...

-

After the sheet of clay has been
formed,
firmed and painted with liquid clay
(slip), I begin to incise or carve.

"SGRAFFITO" is the slow,
delicate technique of removing
the black slip.

I use a variety of small loop tools
to create different thickness lines and white areas.

It takes me anywhere from 10 minute
to an over an hour to finish each design, depending on size and intricacy.

I sweep the final, incised piece with a
soft brush to clean off any crumbs.

The finished SGRAFFITO-WARE piece
is ready for its first firing to bisque.
